  • Offspring of Penny/Vlad/ Czar/Balli Panta Rei/and numerous other dogs we have bred and owned in our breeding program over almost30 years now!

Today Tate found his second elk antler! He is so eager to please it's been a joy training him! Perfect on leash, sit, stay, turn, figure 8 through the legs, picks up his own toys, and trash the kids drop on the floor. We are now working on distance commands in fields and around distractions. He is great with our farm animals, he helps me put the goats away every night by herding them in. He's amazing with the kids! He is protective but not reactive. He settles nicely but is energetic enough to keep up with us. He still goes everywhere with us and he is so quiet most people forget we even have him along. He's growing into the best dog we've ever had!

  • Congratulations Yamil & Neptune on your new BH-VT title!

  • We have been told this dog is an exceptional tracking dog. Considering his lines, it is of no surprise to those that know.

A half-brother of our Penny is a new recruit in Canada! We wish Raddix and his handler, who's previous K9 partner (now retired) came from Sapphire Shepherds, much success and fun in the next few months of training.

  • A half-brother of ULKA makes the news! All of us at Sapphire Shepherds join in the celebration of K9 Taro and Officer Adams fine work. Sapphire Shepherds is very proud of the multiple generations of dogs we have bred and owned here in Montana behind this police K9.

In Pepperell last week, a missing 5-year-old child with autism wandered from home, prompting a large search with police officers, including K9 Officer Adams and K9 Taro, swarming the area. With a brook nearby and knowing that some people with autism are drawn to water, the urgency for police was high.

K9 Taro quickly picked up a track and within 45 minutes led officers to the child, police said. An officer then carried the child back to their family.

“We set a perimeter. K9 Taro established a solid track into the wood line, where we found the young child going down a hill toward a stream,” said K9 Officer Adams. “It’s a great feeling. It’s a good outcome for the family, it’s a good win for everybody that’s working.” The family “couldn’t say ‘thank you’ enough,” Adams told Boston 25 News.

K9 Taro is a dual-purpose K9, trained not only in locating missing people/tracking but also evidence, narcotics, protection & obedience. “It’s a game for him,” Adams said. “He just thinks he’s playing this fun game and gets his reward at the end.”

K9 Taro is the town’s first police dog, launching the K9 unit two years ago. In his short career, working in Pepperell and assisting agencies in several surrounding communities, K9 Taro has already located more than 20 missing people, it’s been an extreme blessing for the town, Adams said.

  • Obedience practice with multiple dogs.

SAR Yves has completed his CGC, CGCA, CGCU.

  • Lovely Luna!

Hi Ramona, I wanted to take a moment and update you with Luna. We just celebrated having her for 1 year. We have taken 3 levels of obedience training in the course of the year and each time she was outstanding. Her drive and desire to please is exceptional in every way. I can't imagine our lives without her, from her attempts to communicate with us vocally to her good morning leap on the bed every morning. You will always have a gleaming reference from us. Very best wishes!

    Eric & Diane

  • A mix of our females and male Xurk, we have well-mannered company in the kitchen while we make homemade spaghetti.

  • Two good looking best friends. One of our young males of good character being raised right in a family home.

Hi Ramona, I wanted to update you with a few photos of Wolfgang! He is thriving in his life with his big brother Gatsby. He is handsome too… we get endless compliments on walks. He has mastered the basic commands, no longer pulls on his leash and is gentle with people and our cats. I take him to my office where he gets to meet 20-30 people during a day and so we are confident of his good disposition. Thank you so much for everything, we wouldn’t have him without you!

  • Hi Ramona! Freya has been serving us well all these many years and her drive never slowed down. The kids feel safe doing anything in the mountains with her. She's been amazing. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to own such an amazing GSD. Nick & Odin

  • Newspaper article from 1999 on PSD Quasar, a son of PSD Donner when he was used as stud for the Seattle Police Dog Breeding program.

  • Happy holidays Ramona, Here are some pictures I took of our girl this year for you to enjoy as much as I did. She is seriously the best girl ever. Best wishes! Alicia

  • Hi Ramona,
Tate is amazing. Already started into Antler training and knows so many things! We bring him everywhere with us, he’s great in the car and he is exceptional with the kids. Such a stable young pup that is already so even tempered and reliable even at his young age. We receive comments often on how calm and well behaved he is for a shepherd. When it time to train he is focused and not even the kids can distract him from his mission. I hope you have a Merry Christmas! Jordan

  • We love the excellent people that our exceptional, retired broods go to!

    Hi Ramona,

I've been meaning to reach out and say again how amazing Lia is and thank you (again) for her. She's truly wonderful, and so incredibly sweet and loving. Her temperament is exceptional, and everyone loves her. She loves people-time, and gets mobbed by children when she goes into stores with me. Having her saved me during a really rough time, after losing Sage, but since then we've been inseparable.

She's a healthy 67lbs, no issues, happy and loved so much! Thank you! I wish you and your family much happiness and good fortune in 2024. 😊

Leigha & Lia (and my angel, Sage)

  • Excellent hips! PennHIP scores of 0.18 & 0.19 for “Lori”. This score put her hips within the tightest 5% of DIs for the breed. She is a daughter of Xurk of Sapphire Mountain. She trains in PSA and is a wonderful home companion, friend and protector.

    Ramona,
She takes pressure well, bites very hard and deep, environmentally she is excellent. Embark came in all clear also! What an incredible dog she has been for us, thank you for her Ramona! Terry

  • Hi Ramona, We just spent a few days in Utah exploring some canyons. Jem was ready to go and always followed our scent back. He's a tracker!
He's smart, confident and a quick learner. We look forward to many years of adventures with him!
We love Utah canyon country and we love Jem! Thanks for breeding such fantastic dogs.

    Best wishes for 2024!
    Cathy

  • Hi Ramona , Avah is doing amazing and maturing beautifully. We have started working with a trainer for French Ring. He mentioned how social and stable a dog she is. We hope to get our Brevet sometime next year. I will keep you updated. Attached are photos of her first bite work session. Nice full grips, confidence, and plenty of drive. Thank you so much for my fun best friend.
Happy Holidays to you and your family from ours! Sarah

  • Update on a couple of our young pups.

Thank you for the new addition to our family! He is extremely smart and its so nice having a German Shepherd around again. They are just the best dogs!

  • Update on our dogs.

Hi Ramona, I hope you've been well. I figured it was time to give you a quick update on the pack. They're both doing very well. We do nose classes each week and we're signed up for a seminar this month. I also expect us to be accepted into a local search and rescue team in January.

  • Littermate to our brood Penny of Sapphire Mountain, Police Service Dog (PSD) Pace and handler have completed a grueling 4-month training program and is now fully operational (RCMP) CANADA. • No finer purpose for a dog...

Hey Ramona! Just wanted to update you that Grizzly has been a life changing event for us all but mostly Samara. He was just what she needed in this world. They have been attending a K9 training center weekly since we brought him home. He is the smartest dog I have ever met! He can Heel, sit, down, ignore, and recall very well at his young age. He is protective of Samara already and always has to be at her side. Thank you again for a wonderful dog, I will keep you updated as he continues training.

  • Another busy & successful day on the job for K9 Taro and handler. Very proud of our boy!

At approximately 1:45pm Taro was requested in town for a narcotic search of a vehicle. Officers had reasonable suspicion the occupants were engaged in narcotic activity and requested the search. Taro arrived and showed a clear indication narcotics were present. A search of the vehicle resulted in a number of bags and paraphernalia associated with narcotic use, also during the search officers located ammunition that the subject was not licensed to have . The subject was arrested and brought back for booking.

Fast forward approximately two hours later Taro was again called in town for a male party who fled into the woods out of a vehicle, Taro arrived on scene and immediately began tracking the subject locating him approximately 50 yards into the woods. The suspect was taken into custody without issue! Another great example of K9 use and officers involved!!!!

  • Very happy to hear from owner/handler about how well this son of Vlad is doing! We wish them fun training and good luck with upcoming testing! SAR K9 Lil' Grizz of Sapphire Mountain USD Tracking/Trailing Certified (at 14 months), CGC.

    Hi Ramona,
He is absolutely stunning and so focused he wants to get to work as soon as his paws hit the ground!

  • A lovely daughter of Vlad.

Hi, Ramona. Just wanted to share some pictures of our “z” pup, Revel, with you and let you know how she’s doing. About this time last year I put down the puppy deposit, knowing we were still mourning our Holly dog. Now Revel is a year old and I cannot believe how quickly she filled the void, and then some. She is just as loyal and sweet, but she has better nerves and play drive. She is loved by anyone who meets her, and she meets a lot of people and dogs! What a relief it is to know that she can be trusted in various social situations. She is abundantly social at our shooting events. She loves doing her farm chores, river time, and going riding.

Back in November our other GSD had an FCE and it was a long difficult recovery process, likely since she is already older. Greta needed a lot of my time and energy and couldn’t play with Revel for awhile. When Greta started to get enough strength to feel like playing again, Revel played so gently with her. She filled the void for Greta too.

Thank you for taking such care in your program that you can provide such an animal as this one. You are highly recommended and praised when we are asked where we got this wonderful pup.

    Rebekkah

    Another nice son of Vlad.

  • Police Service Dog (PSD) EX (in Canada). Below are numerous different press releases over the years (translated from French) from the police department on Ex & handlers excellent service!

*Today, our police dog Ex is four years old. He is a male German shepherd from the United States. Member of the canine squad of our Police Service since 2018, he already has several good shots. In June, he traced the trail of a suspect who had just stolen a vehicle. The man had initiated a police chase before abandoning the stolen vehicle in a residential area. He continued his escape on foot, crossed several courtyards and hid in a bush. Without Ex's sense of smell, it would have been impossible to locate him.  Bravo EX!

*Today our police dogs, Ex, is celebrating his fifth birthday! A member of our Police Service Canine Squad since 2018, he has already accumulated several good moves. Last September, around 1 a.m., a patient at the hospital took advantage of the inattention of security guards to run away He was suffering from a serious illness and his state of health required care. Called to the scene, Ex and his handler, Constable Véronique, began screening. Quickly, Ex pointed out the place the man passed through and after a few minutes, he found the individual who had taken refuge outside near an apartment block.

*Today one of our police dogs, Ex, is celebrating his sixth birthday!  A member of this Police Service's canine squad since 2018, he forms an inseparable duo with his dog handler, Constable Véronique. Over the past year, Ex has helped locate several important pieces of evidence during criminal offences, in addition to tracing routes taken by suspects. During an intervention last May, he was called in to help find one of the suspects who had fled on foot after a police chase for a stolen vehicle in the Laval-Ouest sector. Arrived on the scene, Ex begins a screening in the small, wooded area where the suspect fled. Following a track, he arrives in a backyard adjacent to the wood. Ex walks under the balcony where he locates the hidden suspect, completely out of sight. Thanks to Ex's work, the man was arrested by the police.

*Our police dog Ex blows out his 7th candle today! The faithful canine companion of dog handler Véronique has been in service since the fall of 2018. Cheerful by nature, Ex helps police officers in different facets of their work. Just recently, he tracked down a vehicle thief who had fled the scene when police approached. The suspect had taken refuge in the courtyard of a residence and went to see the dog. It also allowed police to find a man whose health was in danger, following a difficult screening in a wooded area and swamps. Nothing stops him!

  • Always great to hear our appreciative clients are training their dog so it is a controllable, well mannered family member! This takes time. Consistency. And occasionally, lessons from a seasoned/proven trainer.

    Hi Ramona,

Ava is 18 months as of yesterday and is a good dog. High drives, offers tons of engagement, and will search for as long as she could. Dedicated to every task. We have done article indication and article searches which she loves.

She knows the basics: sit, down, stand, recall, place (for in the home to settle), loose leash walking for everyday. Some more advanced commands: spin, turn, focused heeling (still in progress), fronts, holds, bark on command, quiet on command, outs, around (I can send her around anything :) ) and I'm probably forgetting some... her impulse control is coming along great. I do daily exercises to keep her sharp such as waiting at the door, putting her in a down throw the ball, and then releasing her to get it.

She is fully off-leash trained by myself at this point but loves to venture off with her independent nature always checking in naturally. She is still a sweet, beautiful pup as you described her, and is social just with more vigilance as she ages. She is such a fun dog!

Also, her vet says she is one of the healthiest GSDs he has seen in a long time! :) Tons of energy and still eating an all-raw diet. Attaching recent photos! Thank you very much for this wonderful dog. We love her so much!

    Sarah

  • Was nice to help get him back home after he went on a walk-about while owners were out of town and speak with them about how well this son of Vlad has been doing with his family in ID.

Hi Ramona,Thank you for helping me get Kenai out of 'dog jail.' I have attached pictures of him for you!

  • A nice email about one of our fine dogs;

Ramona, Been meaning to write you for some time. This is our young “Zion” She has become the joy of our lives. As working dogs go, she is very active and has pushed us to be as well and to be committed to raising her right. Bill and I followed your web and work you have done with your dogs for years. We heard many good things about your dogs from a number of owners across the country. We are delighted to hear our good friends are getting a pup from you this year. Please stay well and keep on producing your great dogs. Karen

  • Hi Ramona,

We are doing great. She's a treasure. A fast learner and eager to please. She's completely crate trained, sleeping most of the night, and well on her way to house trained.

Thanks again. I'm so grateful to have her.

    Susan

  • No better strolling companions! Two well trained dogs from Sapphire Shepherds

Thank you Ramona. I cannot put into words how grateful and proud I am to have these two in my life. They are such amazing dogs, so smart and loyal. I work constantly to keep their trust in me. Every choice I make in my daily life is in their best interest. They were the best thing about being in Montana for me.

  • A very nice SAR prospect heads for his new home in the southwest with an experienced handler and re-peat client. Very happy for all involved as this is a nice pup who can look forward to a great life, many training and working adventures with a fine owner.

  • Owner writes;

    Thank you, Brian

  • Huge congratulations to a very special dog from our breeding program, Chaser and his owner Michele.
After being semi-retired, Chase recently jumped back in and earned two, 2nd place ELT Top Overall Placement awards at the highest level of Nose work, Elite & Specialty Division Trials. Finding 16/17 hides and receiving applause in the Exhibit Hall search.
    Comments from those that know this dog and have watched him work are;
    Chase loves searching.
    This dog is amazing.
    Incredibly smart dog.
    I love him..
He is not only the best! But also super SMART!
    Amazing and very excellent dog!!!
Owner Michele states “ This dog is amazing… The best dog that ever lived… he never asks for anything but gives his whole self whenever asked…”

  • Hawaii holds a special place in my heart, many memories there. So, I am happy a lovely litter of two dogs from our program get to reside there on the beautiful islands in good homes. The owner is truly a lovely being with lovely dogs and she did a superb job in raising a beautiful litter.

  • Machiavelli of Sapphire Mountain; BN CGC TKN VHMA VSWB

Owner writes; “Mac” is doing wonderfully. Always loyal, always by my side, and by far my best worker. This dog exceeded all of my expectations. I wonder sometimes if she is more machine than dog for how well she remembers everything I've taught her and how happy she is to work with me. Almost 7 years old now and recalls happily, lives to please, and smart as ever. She was spayed after 4 and never had a litter. We are hoping to step back in the ring after our pause and trial to finish her CD this year in April/November and I have no lack of confidence in her ability to do so. No real health issues to report, a few fatty bumps under her skin but our veterinarian said they are all benign and unless they grow we don't have to worry (so far none of them have, thankfully). Thank you so much for selling me a dog who is truly like no other, who I will always compare any future dogs to because she is simply amazing. Rest assured she couldn't be more loved here. Alicia, Porta Rico

  • Kanto; May/23/2010 - Feb/15/2023 (photo on his 11th birthday). Kanto passed away just short of 13 years! He was a son of our SANTO of SAPPHIRE MOUNTAIN x Foxi van de Biezenhoeve. He was an excellent representative of the breed and of his particular lines which are firmly cemented in Sapphire Shepherds breeding program.

    Owner writes to us in part;
Kanto was everything I could ever have asked for in a German Shepherd dog and more. Kanto was incredibly smart, notably intelligent, and readily learned everything very quickly. He was calm, confident and powerful, balanced in his drives, and very responsive to handler (not to be confused with soft). He was engaging, funny and patient, and he would play for 24 hours a day. He was absolutely physically beautiful as well, a fact that was not lost on anyone who met him, even on the last day of his life, which, unfortunately was Wednesday, February 15, 2023. My grief is beyond measure.

  • This handsome young male is doing very well both with bite work and cadaver detection training!

  • A great place & owner for one of our retired broods, who writes us; "Really Loving Her!!

  • Happiest of Birthdays to this grand lady of 15 years!!

  • Hi Ramona, Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  • Hi Ramona, I hope you and your family had a great Christmas and have a happy New Year. Avah is 12 months old today so I thought I would share an updated photo with you!
We get so many compliments on her beauty but also her temperament with people, animals, and different environments. What a dog she is becoming!

  • Ramona, Lia is such a joy...thank you again! 💗 Leigha

  • Hi Ramona, Just wanted to check in and let you know that Denali is doing very good and is a very wonderful friend, she definitely knows how to make us laugh! She’s very caring and protective of us. She does enjoy showing off her “bubba shovel“ as we call it. She carries it around and slides on it like a skateboard across the yard. It’s an aluminum grain shovel she has a good time with. She’s truly the best! Happy New Year as well!!

  • Ramona, Wishing you happy holidays. The girls are doing great. Molly

  • Merry Christmas from the pups - Kenzie, Max and Dorothy.

  • Police Service Dog Rhaegar of Sapphire Mountain Dual Purpose, Specialty Narcotics K9.

Interesting note. Rhaegar’s grand dam is 15 year old Brook of Sapphire Mountain (shown in next photo).

  • A very nice update on a daughter of Xurk.

Hi Ramona, our Z pup is doing very well! She gets high praises for her beauty and disposition everywhere she goes. She rides in all our equipment, but just until she won't fit. She's averaging about 3lbs a week. She loves to meet new people and makes quick friends with other dogs. Her happy and confident nature is perfect for our lifestyle. She has nerves of steel and is not easily offended by anything. She is a quick learner and naturally so obedient. I find it obvious that she had a really good mama and breeder to instill respect and good manners. It has made teaching her boundaries really easy. She has been very responsive to "no" and "ouch" from the beginning. We never have to worry about her running off, she's always at foot and so vigilant. Even from a dead sleep she is impossible to sneak away from. From day one she has been a loving and loyal pup.

  • Sirius of Sapphire Mountain SAR Trailing Wilderness

Hello Ramona, Hope this message finds you well. Siri is progressing well. Earlier this summer he passed his first trailing test with SARDUS here in Colorado, and he has another test coming soon. He is routinely successfully doing 24 hr aged trails around a mile long, so we have every expectation he will do well in the coming test He is very high drive when working.

  • Hi Ramona, She's been enjoying NASDA nose work classes, we're picking back up on agility in the new year, she's been a healthy, happy girl. Getting her has been the best decision I've made in a long time. I hope all is well. Garret

It was fascinating to watch him work, and to learn about a dog's nose and how powerful it is. The instructors are both on Search & Rescue. We love it! Best, Michelle

  • Hi Ramona! He LOVED the boat. Super comfortable, nose on the water, over the edge and picked up order. Very, very happy with this young dogs drive, nerve and character that he displays.

  • Wonderful email/photos received (in part below) on a lovely females latest accomplishments; "...Freyja earned HXDs (excellent ranch herding) and HXCsM (excellent tending master designation), high in trial (score 95 score sheet that had WOW! as our critique) she’s up to 8 Champ. pts"...

  • Hello Ramona, Wanted to send an updated photo of Avah. She just went into her first heat cycle at exactly 9 months and is as sweet as ever. She is completely raw fed, perfect weight and VERY strong! So happy with her and thankful to you, Finley and Vlad :) Thank you so much, Sarah

    Hello Ramona,

Ziggy and Shelby are doing well together. She is becoming a good companion already! I think he grew some overnight. He is taking naps in the crate and already adjusting to everything new....

Congratulations on breeding such healthy dogs,

  • Lovey Sapphire Shepherd pup, both in character and looks!

  • A very nice visit from Chip and daughter Samara along with a kind email received after.

Hi Ramona, thanks again for having us out at your beautiful place and showing us your kindness! Samara loved seeing Xurk and Reykja. It was actually a really big deal for her. I have sent the deposit. We will take these months ahead as a time to prepare for our shepherd. Thank you again.

  • A great combination! A well-rounded pup, adorable toddler AND involved, watchful parents that will lay a solid foundation on their pup and involve it in everyday life.

Ramona, Pup is doing great and we are really enjoying her. Our daughter and her are already good friends and getting acquainted with each other. I'll keep you posted on Marty's progress, but we are looking forward to it all and working on her training already. Photos attached and I'll keep you updated on everything. Have a good rest of the day and week and as always, we appreciate it.

  • Bear passed this week, he was in his 12th yr. We are grateful to owner Rene for his trust in allowing us to use his fine dog Bear in our program. Bear was a wonderful dog, strong, balanced with good character. Below is an email about Bear from Rene along with a photo last year taken with his grandson Viska. Thank you Bear for all you did for me and my lucky clients that received one of your fine pups, rest in peace. SG LITTLE BEAR of SAPPHIRE MOUNTAIN Good/Normal, Kkl 2016-2017, BH AD TR3 IPO3 HIT 96 Tracking/IPO2 1st place. Temperament Pronounced/Releases. Producer of titled progeny

Ramona- It has been a long time. I wanted to let you know that Bear died. He was 12 years old and what a wonderful dog!

Bear earned his BH 10 years ago and went on to earn many titles in the following years, up to his Schutzhund 3. They say it takes 3 things to be successful in that sport (a decent handler, a good club, and a dog with the genetics and drives). I really appreciate your breeding program, which enabled that success.

Beyond that he was a great family dog and enjoyed being with us throughout the various changes our lives brought. He was extremely adaptable.

I attached a photo of both Bear and Viska, which was used for a wine that we created for fun last year.

Viska is doing very well. When our club dissolved, we exited the sport but thoroughly enjoy his company daily. This guy has drive in spades and can’t get enough fetch or play! You would think he was a lab from his love of water!! Very fun guy. Attached is a photo of him from a camping trip this weekend.

I hope everything is going well for you.

    Thanks,
    Rene

  • Very busy night for Police Service Dog "Taro" and his handler Officer Dan. Very happy to hear it was so successful and both are safe! Ancestors Yazzy, Donner, Flame ,.... and all of us at Sapphire Shepherds are proud of you!

It was a big night for K9 Taro last night! Early in the night Taro and his handler Officer Dan responded to assist in the search for a suspect involved in a domestic violence incident. Taro flushed the suspect out of the woods into the police cruisers waiting on the street. Then, in the middle of the night, Taro responded to another area where a police pursuit for a carjacking from another town ended and the suspects fled. Taro tracked the three suspects, and they were taken into custody. He then located a gun that one of the suspects threw while running from police. Great job Taro!

  • Littermates Gizzy & Guaner

Very happy to see these two met up at training. Photo taken during a class break of herding on a cool morning.

  • Email received on one of our young Search and Rescue dogs in training;

    Hi Ramona,
He is a wonderful dog - super smart and super head strong! He is the star of his obedience class 😊

In trailing he has moved past the puppy runaways and is now working on a harness and 25' lead. He loves the game and is very food motivated.

Thank you again for such a great dog! Julie

  • Congratulations to Police Service K9 Taro & Officer Dan on completion of training!

Yazzy, Donner, Flame, Raketa and all of us at Sapphire Shepherds are proud of you and wish you a long and safe career.

  • Nice photo from this weekend SAR training of a most wonderful dog!

  • Kind words from one of our clients and beautiful evening photo taken en route to Canada;

Ramona, They are simply stunning and so adaptable. They will be traveling to Florida then back to Hawaii. Thank you for being such a mindful and amazing breeder. I am grateful to have these young dogs. MK

  • A reminder to those looking to send their dog off for board and train. Owner felt she was doing right by her dog as the trainer operates (as so many of these other young so-called trainers do) advertising on face book, are active members of a sport training club and titles dogs.  BUT when this person delivered to owner a dead dog with no apology, blamed it on an unknown medical condition the dog must have had, offered no compensation and drove off....time to go to court!  A year after the death of this young male. the so-called trainer in NY admitted in court guilt and paid maximum amount. Thank you to owner for not giving up or backing down! You can read Ike' memoriam in owners own words below...

    Ike, Memoriam-1yr

“Ike” (Ignacio of Sapphire Mountain) passed away on June 8, 2021, one year ago today in the back of my dog trainer’s SUV. He was found dead at 15 months old in his crate at a dog training/ boarding kennel (Future Canine, LLC) in Ontario, NY. After several hours, his body was returned to me by the trainer (Canine Caliber, LLC) with no explanation as to why he was left with three other dogs in the vehicle on one of the hottest and most humid days last summer. In spite of AC, Ike was enclosed in a crate with minimal air circulation and ability to maneuver. The other three dogs’ body temperatures were taken, reportedly normal, but not Ike’s. The trainer told me “he must have had an underlying medical condition”, never phoned me, nor my veterinarian, nor took him to any one of a dozen veterinary clinics on her 1 ½ hour drive home.

I took Ike’s body to Cornell University’s Animal Health Diagnostic Center the next morning after reporting the incident to my vet and a run around with humane society agents and sheriffs in Erie, Monroe, Wayne and Ontario counties-- none would investigate further, because they “didn’t cross county lines.” Several weeks later, Cornell’s diagnostic report, along with a drug toxicology screen at UC Davis (CA) stated that there was “no underlying natural cause” for Ike’s death and deemed that it was a “heat-related injury (heat stroke)”… including signs of “…congestion, [blood] coagulation”. His body core temperature would have possibly reached 105.8 degrees, and being confined, Ike’s body would not have been able to cool itself down.

I had spoken with three lawyers over the course of this past year, that were unwilling to take on the case, in spite of obvious gross negligence. The dog trainer never contacted me further, nor reported it to her business insurance company to settle my losses. So, I filed a report with the NYS Office of Professional Discipline (OPD) against the second trainer, a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), on whose property Ike died. Several months later, I was told that OPD had lost my complaint form and documentation. I resubmitted the volume of evidence, text messages, necropsy report, police report, which was followed with a letter from the NYS Board for Veterinary Medicine stating that it “didn’t fall under their jurisdiction”-- Ike had been in my original trainer’s care, and he was her responsibility.

So, with encouragement from friends, I filed a complaint in Buffalo City Small Claims Court, and presented in front of a judge last month on May 11. The dog trainer finally texted me two nights before the court date with apologies and said that she was willing to settle. After sleeping on it, I told her to bring a bank cashier’s check in hand to court for the maximum amount that was allowed. My intent was to still present my evidence to the judge, but he was satisfied that the trainer was willing to settle with no questions asked or evidence presented.

In spite of the fact that I feel, as an LVT myself, that this trainer should no longer be in business, my only course of action was to follow the law through the courts. I did not receive a word of apology to my face from the dog trainer nor any further explanation as to what happened prior to and following Ike’s death. Her only comment via text was, “what could [she] have done differently to prevent what happened…”

  • SAR Ursa of Sapphire Mountain II, Basic Trailing 1 & 2

Big congratulations to “Anika” (call -name) and her owner/handler on their SAR certifications!
Donner/Touché/and breeder are very happy to hear about these accomplishments.

  • Hi Ramona, I wanted to share that Angus passed his CGC and was told he was a "star". He did very well. We are so proud of him. (Diane was the trainer for the course). Best, Michelle

  • Hi! Ramona. I just wanted to update you. He is a very good boy, loves the family and all the critters on our place- we have put in some work this past fall and winter and was awarded star puppy and most recently CGC. He is very food motivated and uses his nose all the time. We are going to start nose work and more competitive obedience in the near future! Thanks for breeding such a good tempered smart dog our whole family loves!

  • I'm not sure what I've done to be so blessed. Thank you Ramona. Dave in Alaska

  • Hi Ramona, Thought I would share an update and a few pictures of our pup from the Xurk/Eiger litter. We ended up naming him Zirk. Basically a homonym of the Xurk name, but we were all in agreement that it was our favorite name. He has been a great pup! It's been a training learning experience, mainly for us, to get in tune with the Shepherd personality and training. We found a professional trainer who has helped us work out our training methodology. We took him to the Oregon coast and he did awesome on the trip, hotel stays, public walking/dogs/beach. He is super social with people, easy going in crowds and good with most dogs. There are a few dogs that he doesn't mix with, but he isn't overly aggressive, just lets them know he isn't interested in getting too close. Hope all is well with you and the dogs. Blessings, Mike

  • Good morning Ramona! Despite very lazy practicing all winter, she knocked it out of the park. She finished her started A course duck title on geese, under an Australian shepherd/border collie judge, who commented what a lovely and correct dog she is in her work. All attendees at that trial commented on how joyful she is to work and what a nice shepherd she is both overall and specifically to her stock. She swept the field with another trial weekend, taking high in trial 2 days and reserve high in trial another. She put up scores in the 90s consistently across both C and D courses. She’s earned another 2-3 championship points as well! Attached are our win photos. Hope all is well! Lauren

  • Nice message received on a young daughter of Vlad and Khalia;

    Hi Ramona,
Just a quick update, Tango will be going to a Police Dept. in September as a Narcotic and scent specific Trailing K9. She is doing well, very high food drive. I’ll send some photos when the weather dries up.
    Matt

  • Hi Ramona, Pax is doing great. He has one of the best temperaments I've seen in a dog. Non aggressive, very kind and so much fun. Good with kids, puppies, kittens....everthing! Definitely has become a best friend. Tylar, MT

  • Hi Ramona, The biting has gotten much better, and she seems to be pretty settled in. I set up training to begin but I've started doing some of the basics and she's doing very well! She's so smart, sweet and social! Sarah in CA

  • Hi Ramona, This is Stella (daughter of Donner) with our 4 boys. She is an amazing dog and a huge part of our family. She thinks she is the mother of our boys.

  • Good Morning Ramona, I wanted to share some photos of Angus with you. He is 14 months now, and 85 pounds! He is a beautiful, sweet, friendly boy. He loves playing in the snow, and we take him hiking, snowshoeing, etc. We are heading next week to camp and ski. Angus will come with us, and he will be at dog day camp the days we ski, and he will enjoy hiking with us the other days. He travels well in the truck. In April, Angus will be taking his CGC Course! Best, Michelle, Oliver, and Angus

  • Hi Ramona, Wanted you to know Broker is doing great. Very easy to train and great with the kids. Thanks Ramona! Chad NV

  • Kind words from an old client.

    Hi Ramona,
I'm very fortunate to have found your website about 10 years ago when I was looking for dogs/breeders. At that time, I clearly remember connecting with your writings on natural rearing & holistic medicine, your geographic environment exposed in your breathtaking photography, and of course your dogs. I definitely had found where my puppies were going to be coming from. Very much looking forward to my second pup from you! Thanks Ramona! -Eric

  • Female pup Maya

    Ramona,

I want to thank you for breeding and raising a wonderful pup. I have decided to call her Maya. I figure it must be hard for you to raise these pups and then send them out into the world, so I wanted to give you an update. …………..

I wanted to send a quick note letting you know that Zia has just passed her AKC CGC test and is currently training for her Brevet title in Mondio Ring. She is the most wonderful dog in every way and I couldn’t be happier! The photo included is from an afternoon spent running through the Camas flowers.
